The two official languages of Majorca are Spanish and Mallorquin, a variant of Catalan. Getting around the island is easy, as most hotels, bars and restaurants speak English and German, but it always leaves a good impression if you attempt a few Spanish words.
For example:
Hello: Hola
Good morning: Buenas dias
Good night: Buenos noches
How are you?: ¿Cómo está?
Good. And you?: Bien. ¿y tú?
Please: Por favor
Thank you: Gracias
You're welcome: De nada
Yes/No: Sí/No
Where is ...?: ¿Dónde está ...?
How much does it cost?: ¿Cuanto cuesta?
Repeat, please: Repita, por favor
I don't speak Spanish: No hablo español
Do you speak English?: ¿Habla inglés?
When out shopping, remember that the island takes a siesta and most shops will close from around 13:30 to 17:00. Also, almost all stores are closed on Sunday
You can drink the tap water on the island, but it has a very strong mineral flavor so everyone drinks bottled water. You can order water “con gas,” with carbonation, or “sin gas,” still. And be aware of ice as it is not always made with bottled water.
Banks are usually open from 9 am to 2 pm Monday to Friday, and many have cash machines outside.
There are laundry facilities at most hotels, but they are usually extremely expensive. Other laundry services are offered in the bigger towns and may be better priced.
If you get sick on the island, the pharmacies, marked by the large green crosses, should have most major types of medicine.
